Though relatively close to Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, Lake Clark National Park & Preserve is still difficult to get to, with no roads connecting it to the rest of the state and only limited boat access. A huge variety of natural features and formations make visiting the park an exciting adventure, with three converging mountain ranges, two active volcanoes, a rainforest-lined coastline, a tundra plateau and many lakes all located within its boundaries. The red salmon fishing within this park is some of the best in the state, and there are many other species of fish that run the park's waters as well. Hunting is allowed within the preserve while the park contains herds of moose, caribou, dall sheep and wolves. Heading out from Port Alsworth, the Tanalian Falls trail offers miles of maintained trails for visitors to enjoy, while much of the rest of the park is simply a make-your-own-way adventure. Located on the west side of Cook Inlet, most trips into the park require air transport for at least the last portion of the journey.
Open daily year round. Visitor center dates and hours vary, check website for details.
